Congratulations, Dr. Chip Thomas.

In 1992, four of us set out to bike the length of Africa, from Bizerte, Tunisia, at the very top of Africa, all the way to Cape Agulhas at the southern tip of South Africa. About 12,000 miles and nine and a half months later, we made it. Chip was our team doctor, and more than once he was the reason the rest of us kept pedaling.

This week Chip was named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow, one of just 20 people in the country to receive the “genius grant.” For 36 years he worked as a physician on the Navajo Nation. Along the way, under the name jetsonorama , he became one of the most important public artists in America, pasting giant black and white photographs of the Diné onto barns, water tanks, and roadside buildings across the reservation. His work gives dignity and a face to a community the rest of the country too often drives right past.

I have watched this man take care of people his whole life. First a ragged team of cyclists in the desert, and ever since, the community he chose to serve. We are so proud of you, Chip.
