How to start tennis as an adult? 👇🏼

• YOU DO NOT NEED EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT TO START.

One racket.
One pair of proper tennis shoes.
Do not spend a fortune on the racket yet.
You will not know what you prefer until you have played for a few months.

Everything else:
the fancy bag,
the extra rackets,
the clothes,
that comes later.
Much later.

• THE RACQUET
You do not need to overthink this.
Look for something lightweight with a head size around 100-105 square inches.

This gives you a larger sweet spot which means more forgiveness when you mishit.

• SHOES: THIS MATTERS MORE THAN THE RACKET.
Tennis involves constant lateral movement that running shoes cannot support.

Ankle rolls happen fast in the wrong footwear.

Look for dedicated tennis shoes:
Asics Gel-Dedicate,
Babolat Propulse Fury,
Wilson Rush.

• USE SLOWER BALLS IN THE FIRST MONTH

Orange dot or green dot lower compression balls move slower and bounce lower than standard yellow balls.

• TAKE LESSONS BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE

This is the most important advice.

Adults who self-teach develop technical errors that take years to fix.
A slightly wrong grip.
A swing that loops incorrectly.
Footwork that consistently puts you behind the ball.

6-8 lessons at the start costs less in time and frustration than fixing those habits a year later.

• NOBODY IS JUDGING YOU.

Nobody is watching you.

Sports psychology research confirms that beginners consistently and significantly overestimate how much experienced players are observing them.

• IT TAKES TIME. DON’T RUSH IT

Weeks 1-4: Controlled chaos.

This is uncomfortable and completely normal.

Months 2-3: Consistent contact. Rallying becomes possible.

Months 4-6: You can sustain a rally. You understand basic positioning.

Year 1: You can play a real match. Experience competitive pressure.

This is where most adult starters fall genuinely in love with the sport.
