Interim manager Don Mattingly wanted the Phillies' best reliever on the mound as early as possible Tuesday, but his decision backfired, and the Fightins are now on the brink of elimination.

Mattingly turned to Phillies closer Jhoan Duran in the seventh inning with a lead. An inning later with two outs, Duran served up a three-run home run to Austin Riley.

After the Phillies' 5-3 loss to the Braves in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series, Duran faced questions about why Mattingly turned to him so early in the game and whether his manager was asking too much of him.

"I threw the first inning and I go back to the dugout and they said be ready for another inning and so I go back out there and try to do my work," Duran told reporters.
