## Caption

🪨 A laser engraver used a red diode laser to burn Willem Dafoe’s face into a smooth river stone, revealing the portrait layer by layer as the beam passed across the surface. The finished piece sits about the size of a palm. Laser engraving on natural stone works by scorching the top layer to expose contrast in the rock’s mineral composition, which is why the result looks almost like a photograph pressed into the material.
