Uncrating a monumental Rothko canvas. ‘Untitled (Plum and Dark Brown)’ now hangs in the Grotto at #SothebysHongKong ahead of The Hong Kong Sales on 28 September.

This 1964 work comes from a celebrated group of large-scale, contemplative paintings that foreshadowed Rothko’s 1965 Chapel series. With these paintings, he left behind the hazy, glowing color which had defined his works of the 1950s, turning instead towards ascetic black fields. In Rothko’s hands, black achieves an unmatched sense of color and luminosity.

See ‘Untitled (Plum and Dark Brown)’ as part of the PSYCHO exhibition at our Maison through 27 September. It’ll then star in The Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction, presented in partnership with celine. Register to bid at the link in bio.
