Two men are dead and another is in critical condition after their coworker opened fire on them at a business in Manassas, Virginia, police say.

The suspect, 37-year-old Marvin Grant, went to work Wednesday morning at United Rentals at 9415 Wellington Road and told a coworker that three people were going to die, Manassas City Police Chief Douglas Keen said.

“Mr. Grant came to work this morning, made a statement to a coworker that three people are going to die, he then produced a handgun and began shooting,” said Manassas City Police Chief Doug Keen.

Police said Grant swapped out his license plate sometime after midnight Wednesday, putting a temporary North Carolina tag on his vehicle that he drove to work.

Police said after an altercation, Grant pulled his gun and started shooting. The victims were rushed in critical condition to a hospital, where two of them died of their injuries later in the morning. Police identified the victims who died as Richard Lamot, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33.

An online fundraiser for Serrano's family says he was a devoted partner and father to a 10-year-old boy and 3-year-old girl.

As Serrano was being loaded into the ambulance, police were able to get his fiancé, Mayra Maturano, on the phone so she could hear his voice one last time.

“When the police were talking to him they were telling, ‘Hey, ya know she’s on the phone, tell me about her, tell me about your kids.’ And his last words were, ‘I love you. I’m not gonna make it.’”

Keen said he personally knew Lamot, a father who coached youth football in Fauquier County for years.

"September's been a rough month. We lost a 16-year-old. Now I lost somebody I actually coached youth football with. And knowing what his commitment was and knowing his children and now fatherless, it hits home. It hits home for our community," Keen said, referring to a shooting earlier this month that killed a 16-year-old girl in Manassas.

The third person who was shot is stable but will need to undergo surgery, Keen said.
