## Caption

Jet engines operate under extreme temperatures because burning fuel creates rapidly expanding gases that produce thrust. Inside the engine, temperatures can reach far beyond what ordinary metals could withstand without specialized alloys, cooling systems and carefully controlled airflow. Even after an engine is shut down, components around the exhaust can remain dangerously hot because the metal and surrounding structures retain thermal energy. This is why jet engines require time and procedures to cool before maintenance crews can safely work around them.
