Silene stenophylla produced living plants from material preserved in Siberian permafrost for roughly 32,000 years. Scientists recovered immature fruit tissue from an ancient squirrel burrow buried deep within permanently frozen sediment. Instead of simply germinating an intact ancient seed, researchers used tissue culture and cloning techniques to regenerate fertile plants. The success demonstrated how extreme cold can preserve viable plant tissue for extraordinarily long periods. It also showed that permafrost can act as a natural archive containing genetic material from ancient ecosystems.
