A study involving 309 couples found romantic partners were significantly more similar in their music tastes than would be expected by chance, with musical compatibility even outweighing similarities in personality traits and personal values.⁠

Researchers also found that sharing favourite artists was modestly associated with greater tenderness in relationships, although they stressed that having identical playlists isn’t what makes or breaks a couple. The study was correlational, so it also can’t prove that matching music tastes actually cause happier relationships.⁠
