IF THIS WAS D9, WOULD EVERYBODY BE TALKING ABOUT IT?

A fraternity case at Cornell University just took a major turn.

The Tompkins County District Attorney has reopened a criminal investigation involving allegations connected to Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity house. A former student filed a civil lawsuit this month alleging she was drugged and sexually assaulted by seven current or former students during an October 2024 incident. Cornell says Chi Phi’s Xi Chapter remains barred from campus. No criminal charges have been filed, and the allegations have not been proven in court.

But here’s the question we think is worth having:

If these same allegations involved a Divine Nine organization, would the entire organization be under a microscope?

Would people only discuss the individuals accused, or would the conversation quickly become about the letters, the culture, the process and the Divine Nine as a whole?

Chi Phi is not a Divine Nine fraternity.

This isn’t about asking for less accountability for Black Greek organizations. It’s about asking whether the standard stays the same regardless of which letters are involved.

If the letters matter when they’re D9, the letters shouldn’t suddenly stop mattering when they’re not.

What do you think?
