One of the hardest things about meeting someone in mental health crisis is knowing that you may be seeing them after weeks, months or even years of pain that nobody else fully understood.

By that point, shame, guilt, trauma or loneliness may have changed how they see themselves. Some people struggle to explain what is happening. Some minimise it. Some are frightened of becoming a burden to the people around them.

That is why I try not to make somebody prove the seriousness of their pain before I take it seriously.
Listen. Stay with the conversation. Help them reach the support they need. And when the immediate crisis has passed, remember that care does not have to become complicated to remain meaningful.

If someone is in immediate danger, seek urgent professional or emergency support.
