#TSRLocalLens: Tennessee officials were unable to complete the execution of #ChristaPike on Wednesday after the lethal injection did not appear to work as expected, according to media witnesses.

Pike, 50, was reportedly given what appeared to be two doses of pentobarbital, APNews reports. However, witnesses said she remained alive and appeared to be snoring more than 40 minutes after the final dose. Media witnesses were later escorted out, and the Tennessee Department of Correction did not immediately explain what happened.

The execution had already been delayed for hours by last-minute legal challenges. The U.S. Supreme Court ultimately cleared the way for it to proceed after overturning a temporary stay from a federal appeals court. Pike’s attorneys later filed another emergency request to stop the execution, arguing she was experiencing unnecessary suffering.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old #ColleenSlemmer, which she committed when she was 18. Had the execution been completed, Pike would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. (📸: TN Dept. of Corrections) ✍🏾: #TSRStaffLG
