Figure has given its Figure 02 humanoid robots an incredibly unusual retirement, with most of the fleet now officially gone. 🤖🔥

As Figure moves toward scaling its newer Figure 03 platform, the company decided keeping the older F.02 fleet running no longer made practical sense. Dismantling them individually wasn’t exactly efficient either. Their custom actuators and proprietary components would have required engineers to take apart each robot by hand, potentially taking enough time to slow development of the next generation.

Then the internet had an idea.

When Figure asked what it should do with the retiring robots, Arnold Schwarzenegger simply replied: “Melt them.”

Figure reached out to Schwarzenegger, and the joke eventually became a real plan with an unmistakable Terminator vibe.

Finding a facility willing to accept complete humanoid robots wasn’t easy. Several foundries in the U.S. and Mexico reportedly turned them away because the machines contained lithium-ion batteries. Figure eventually found a facility in Imatra, Finland, where the robots could safely be processed.

The F.02 units were first trained in San Jose to autonomously perform the jump. They were then transported to Finland and sent into a 75-ton electric arc furnace filled with molten steel. Figure says the footage was real and not AI-generated.

The metal recovered from the robots is being sent back to the U.S., where Figure plans to turn it into a limited collection of artifacts commemorating Figure 02.

A small number of F.02 robots will reportedly be kept in storage, but most of the fleet has now met a very dramatic end. 🔥🤖
