he 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered roughly $2 billion in economic impact to New York City, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani's office. While the impact was huge for the city, it was greater across the New York-New Jersey region given that the World Cup generated $3.5 billion across the area, Mamdani said Wednesday, citing a preliminary city analysis. Mamdani also said that the New York City-specific $2 billion economic impact included $1.3 billion in direct visitor and operation spending. Part of the impact was due to increased foot-traffic to area business. Sports bars in the city increased visitors by 16% throughout the World Cup, according to Mamdani. The months-long tournament also supported 12,000 jobs in hospitality, food service, retail and more. #nyc #mamdani #worldcup #economy #news
