In the last few months of 1994, José’s father was dying of AIDS, but Margaret Cho brought laughter. On this episode of @lovetaketwopod José talks to @themargaretcho growing up in a Puerto Rican neighborhood where you didn’t talk about AIDS. You didn’t talk about being gay. Even family members stopped coming around, afraid the cousins would “catch it.” But some nights it was just the three of them, José, his mom and his dad, laughing together in the living room. On the TV was Margaret Cho, being fully, unapologetically herself on network television. Margaret’s response: “That’s why I do what I do. To unite those of us who just feel different. Whether you’re immigrant or gay or you just feel awkward.” Thirty years later, José finally got to tell her what that laughter meant. 🤍 This #LGBTQHistoryMonth, we’re remembering the families who loved in silence, and the voices that made them feel less alone. 🎧 The full episode of Love, Take Two with @margaret_cho is on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.
