There’s a better way to smell a rose.

A quick sniff gives you only part of the story. Rose fragrance isn’t one scent but many — floral, fruity, spicy, musky, even tea-like notes that emerge and change as you linger.

In “The Secret Language of Roses,” Danielle Dall’Armi Hahn suggests doing something deceptively simple — slow down.

Visit roses in the cool morning, when their fragrance is often richest. Instead of one big inhale, take several gentle breaths. Give your nose a moment and you may begin to pick out scents you missed at first — citrus, clove, honey, fruit, tea.

And then come back later.

The same rose may smell different as the day warms or the flower ages. Temperature, humidity, sunlight and growing conditions all influence the volatile compounds a bloom releases.

Perhaps that’s part of why rose fragrance is so powerfully tied to memory. You’re never experiencing just the rose. You’re smelling that particular flower, on that particular morning, in that particular place.

Turns out “stop and smell the roses” is more specific advice than we thought. 🌹
