Dealer had a 993 on the floor at $145k and a 996 in the back lot at $38k, and the salesman spent ten minutes explaining why the cheap one was "a different kind of car." It isn't. It's the same recipe, built later, by the company that was three months from going under when it committed to water-cooling.

Here's what the fried-egg jokes never mention: the 996 Turbo and GT3 run the Mezger flat six — motorsport lineage, same block family that came out of the GT1 program. No IMS anxiety, no asterisk. And the base cars people love to trash went 3.4L / 300hp in 99-01, then 3.6L / 320hp from 2002 with the facelift lights nobody complains about anymore. Six speed manual. Rear-engine balance. Hydraulic steering that talks more than anything Porsche sells today.

The 993 earned its number. Last air-cooled, Varioram cars at 285hp, the widebody stance that defined the shape forever. Nobody's arguing that. But it earned it in 1996 dollars and it's being sold in 2025 speculation dollars, and those are two different transactions.

If you want the actual value play: 997.2. DFI engine from 2009 up, IMS question closed permanently, PDK or a proper 6MT, and it still looks like a 911 instead of a concept sketch. It's the last one that feels analog and the first one you don't have to pre-inspect like a crime scene.

All of them run 5x130 with a 71.6 hub bore, which means the wheel you want fits the generation you can afford. That's the part the ranking arguments always skip.
