John grew up with dogs.  I never did but I never spent one day of my life without cats.  When the kids were small he said he’d love to get a dog but I had 6 small children to raise and didn’t think could handle one more thing to keep alive. Years later when our cat June was nearing the end of her life I said I was ready, but not until June  left us… When she finally passed at the age of 22, I agreed to get a dog. 
John and I both feel very strongly about rescue (#adoptdontshop) and I found a wonderful organization called pawsafe. I found out about an adoption they were having the following week and we applied for one of the dogs.  John took the 6 kids to NY that Saturday morning to pick out our first dog.  I purposely did not go because I knew myself well enough to know that I wouldn’t be able to look at those other dogs there and not want to take them all home. So I trusted John to pick out our new sweetheart. 
They were the first in line that morning  and when they went in, they saw a few pens filled with dogs.  They walked to one pen and it was filled with many puppies who were jumping excitedly around and practically performing to get everyone’s attention. All except for one. That one was quietly and patiently sitting in the back of the pen, observing all the antics of the other puppies…. John saw her and said to the people working that day, “I’ll like to see that one”. And that is how Charlie became ours 🥹
