Congratulations to Rand Alkhunaizi, our spring 2026 Sociology major marshal! 🎓🎉

Rand is the daughter of Tayseer Baqir Alkhunaizi and Sabah Abdulwahed Abuaziz of Al Qatif, Saudi Arabia. She is graduating with bachelor of arts degrees in Sociology and Psychology.

As an international student, Rand found her community and academic home through pennstate_pfp. The program's honors courses pushed her academically, created the close-knit environment she was looking for, and opened a pathway to psushc. Now, as a member of the Paterno Fellows Student Advisory Board, she helps guide other students through their own journeys.

As a Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) fellow, she spent two months in Mexico City collecting data on second-language speech perception, working under Associate Professor of Spanish and Linguistics Matthew Carlson in the MultiGrammar Lab. She also conducted research in the Newman Depression and Anxiety Lab with Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry Michelle Newman, where she completed her honors thesis. Her work earned her invitations to present at national conferences, including the Linguistic Society of America in Philadelphia and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies in New Orleans.

Passionate about mental health, Rand co-founded the Mindfulness and Science of Happiness (pennstatemash) Club after recognizing an opportunity to expand campus conversations around well-being. She served as president, creating a space where students could talk openly about mental health. For two years, she volunteered with CentreHelps as a hotline counselor, assisting callers from the local community and national suicide hotline, an experience that affirmed her commitment to clinical psychology.

As an Undergraduate Research Ambassador, Rand mentors students one-on-one, demystifying the "hidden curriculum" of research and making opportunities more accessible for others.

After graduation, Rand will attend cambridgeuniversity to pursue a Master of Philosophy in Foundations of Clinical Psychology.
