Meet Clarice Phelps, who made history as the first African American woman to help discover an element on the periodic table. After graduating from Tennessee State University with a degree in chemistry, she went on to serve four years in the Navy working with radioactive materials. She later joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and there she helped purify berkelium, which was used as target material for element 117. That element was named tennessine and officially added to the periodic table in 2016. “Taking a seat at the periodic table didn’t happen overnight; it was actually a 20-year journey,” she said. She later recalled looking herself up and thinking of the little girl who once searched for someone like her in science. #blackgirlsrock #blackgirlmagic #blackexcellence #melanin blackwomen
