A 17-year-old Phoenix teen helped police identify the man accused of shooting him in the final moments before he passed away.

Just after midnight on September 8, officers responded to a west Phoenix park and found Sincere D’Andre Venson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. While first responders were trying to save him, police say Venson identified 18-year-old Joshua Armstrong as the person he believed shot him.

Venson didn’t just give them a name. He described Armstrong’s black BMW and gave officers access to his phone so they could confirm Armstrong’s phone number.

Venson was rushed to the hospital, where he passed away about an hour later.

Investigators then began finding evidence that supported what he had told them. A phone discovered near the park reportedly matched the number saved for Armstrong, while surveillance footage showed Venson, Armstrong, 18-year-old Luis Gonzalez and two others arriving at the park together before the shooting.

Two witnesses later told detectives there had been no argument leading up to the shooting and described it as unprovoked. Police say surveillance footage showed Armstrong and Gonzalez running from the area afterward, with Gonzalez appearing to carry a gun.

According to court documents, Gonzalez later told investigators Armstrong opened fire on Venson and then told him to take a gun from Venson as he lay on the ground. Armstrong denied knowing Venson before requesting an attorney when detectives told him Venson had identified him.

Armstrong and Gonzalez were both arrested and booked on first-degree murder and armed robbery charges, with bond set at $1 million each.

Venson was only 17, but the information he was able to give first responders became a major part of the case against the two men now accused in his death.

Rest in peace, Sincere. 🕊️
