A Buckeye family has been forced out of their home after a fire during a West Valley thunderstorm.

Kelly Lacey told 12News she was just waking up Thursday morning when a roommate yelled for her to get out. She said they heard a bang, looked out the window and saw a big fireball. The fire destroyed an outer wall of the home and spread to the attic.

Her husband, Spenser Patton, and their children had already left for school. The home is currently unlivable, and the family has no place to sleep.

Patton says the tools he works with were destroyed, leaving him out of work. A crowdfunding page has been created to help the family recover the tools and find housing.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause. The same morning, lightning struck an elementary school a few miles away in Buckeye, though nothing in the reporting links the two.
