For more than 130 years, people have searched Arizona’s Superstition Mountains for a legendary lost gold mine.

Nobody has ever proven they found it.

The story begins with Jacob Waltz, a German prospector who lived in Phoenix and died in 1891. After his death, roughly 50 pounds of high-grade gold ore was reportedly discovered beneath his bed. Where that gold actually came from remains a mystery.

Then the legend grew: a hidden Peralta mine, secret maps, buried gold near Weaver’s Needle and Waltz supposedly revealing the mine’s location on his deathbed. None of those parts of the story have ever been proven.

There’s another twist: the “Dutchman” wasn’t actually Dutch. Waltz was German, and the nickname likely came from a misunderstanding of “Deutsch.”

Geologists have also questioned whether the massive gold deposit described in the legend could even exist in the Superstitions. But gold really was mined nearby, including at the historic Mammoth Mine in the Goldfield district.

That’s part of why people never stopped looking.

Some searches have even ended in tragedy. In 2010, three men searching for the mine disappeared in the mountains and their remains were later discovered. Decades earlier, treasure hunter Adolph Ruth vanished there while reportedly carrying a map.

To this day, nobody knows for sure whether the Lost Dutchman Mine ever existed or whether one of Arizona’s biggest legends has been sending people into the desert for nothing.

If you had a map that supposedly showed where it was, would you go looking? 👀⛰️
