A 5-year-old Peoria boy passed away after being found unresponsive inside his family’s vehicle, and now both of his parents are facing negligent homicide and child abuse charges.

Police say the family returned home from another child’s baptism around 1 p.m. on September 13. Nearly three hours later, family members realized the 5-year-old was missing and began searching for him. His mother eventually found him unresponsive inside the vehicle. 

Family members pulled him out and immediately began CPR before first responders arrived. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later passed away.

Investigators say there appears to have been a miscommunication over who was supposed to get the boy out of the vehicle. Prosecutors said Anca Sabo asked her husband, Mihail, to get their son. The family’s attorney says Mihail then asked their 14-year-old to do it, while the teenager told the court he didn’t remember being asked. 

Temperatures in the area climbed above 100 degrees that afternoon, and police said the death was being investigated as heat-related. The official cause and manner of death were still pending when the case was reported. 

Anca and Mihail Sabo were arrested following their son’s death. Their attorney described what happened as a “heartbreaking accident” and argued the charges were not appropriate, pointing to the parents calling 911, attempting to save their son and cooperating with investigators. 

A judge set bond at $150,000 each and ordered the parents to have no contact with each other. They were allowed supervised contact with their other children. 

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
