A Gilbert woman who has battled liver cancer for 15 years says a new non-invasive procedure has left her feeling “reborn.”

Linda Lindquist, 77, was diagnosed 15 years ago. She had just come back from a hiking trip to Machu Picchu in Peru, feeling strong and keeping pace with people younger than her, when a sharp pain in her stomach was the first sign something was wrong. She recalls that her liver tumor weighed four and a half pounds and was the size of a volleyball. It was removed in a 2011 surgery in Houston. In a video recorded after that surgery, she said it was hard to believe what she had thought was a hernia turned out to be a cancerous tumor.

She recently underwent histotripsy, a new non-invasive procedure. Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center is one of the only hospitals in Arizona offering it.

Lindquist says she has approached her fight with a positive outlook and describes herself as full of joy and gratitude. “I feel reborn,” she said.

Worth noting: histotripsy is currently FDA-approved to treat liver cancer only. Research is underway to determine whether it could also be effective against other forms of cancer. Individual results vary, and anyone with questions about treatment should talk with their doctor.
