A Phoenix tour company has sued over the higher national park fees that foreign visitors pay to enter the Grand Canyon.

Across Arizona Tours filed the lawsuit Monday. The higher entry fee for foreign tourists took effect in January, after President Trump signed an executive order last year. International visitors now pay an extra $100 per person on top of the standard $20 to $35 entry fee. Or they can buy an annual pass for $250, which is more than three times the $80 charged to U.S. citizens and residents.

The company says its business has dropped over the past year because many of its potential foreign customers are skipping the Grand Canyon over the fees. The lawsuit says the fees have hurt the company, which it says has lost business from would-be tourists choosing not to visit. It also says the National Park Service’s residency requirement creates friction with customers who find the residency questions invasive.

The lawsuit asks the court to end the nonresident entrance fees and the nonresident annual pass.

Worth noting: these are the company’s claims and the case is just getting started. The Interior Department has defended the higher fees, saying U.S. residents already help pay for the parks through taxes and that foreign visitors should contribute to their upkeep. Other factors have also been reported as affecting Grand Canyon visits over the past year.
