OpenAI is rolling out Dots, always on AI agents inside ChatGPT that can continue working between conversations.

Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, can connect to more than 4,000 apps, remember ongoing context, run scheduled tasks and work across connected services. Users can establish approval rules before actions are taken.

That changes the mental model of ChatGPT.

For most of the AI era, you opened a chatbot, asked something, received an answer and left.

Dots point toward something very different: persistent AI teammates that research, monitor, organize and execute work while you are doing something else.

The important transition is becoming clearer.

AI is moving from assistant to always on teammate.

And once agents can persist across time, applications and workflows, the chat window stops being the product.

It becomes the interface to an AI operating layer.
