For this first Garage Active write-up, we’re starting under the hood. Established in 1992 and based in Yukuhashi, Fukuoka, Japan, Garage Active brings decades of experience to GT-R tuning, engine building, and complete vehicle construction. Their work goes far beyond appearance, and their RB-powered projects give us plenty to talk about. Take their Midnight Purple III R32 GT-R. Beneath the carbon bodywork sits an RB26-based engine expanded to 3.0 liters using an HKS kit, paired with an HKS GT75115-BB turbocharger. Garage Active reports output exceeding 1,000 PS for that build. That is serious engineering beneath an equally serious exterior. But the story is not simply about chasing the biggest power number. For that same engine combination, Garage Active highlights the increased displacement and HKS V-Cam system as key to making the large single-turbo setup more manageable to drive. Then there is their naturally aspirated RB31 project, a completely different expression of RB performance. Using an RB30-based engine enlarged to 3.1 liters, Garage Active pursued an engine note worthy of the build, complete with a one-off exhaust manifold. No turbocharger is needed for this chapter. That contrast is what makes their engine work so interesting: a high-output turbocharged RB at one end, and a naturally aspirated interpretation at the other.
