September 29th is National Coffee Day! Today, we salute one of the first coffee businesses in Sacramento, the Star Coffee and Spice Mills owned by Nathaniel Dingley.

Nathaniel Dingley, a tradesman from Boston, came to California in 1850 for the Gold Rush. He moved to Sacramento after operating a store near Truckee and a bakery in Marysville. After moving to Sacramento, he bought the failed Star Mill coffee business near Front and I Streets at public auction. In 1852, the coffee business burned in the Great Conflagration on November 2nd along with 80 percent of the buildings in Sacramento. The Star Mill was soon rebuilt as a brick structure. The Dingley Coffee and Spice Mill offered imported green, roasted, and freshly ground coffee beans, in addition to spices and syrups.

Dingley’s business burned down again in 1858 but was rebuilt in 1859. Dingley lived above his coffee shop until he passed away on August 25, 1897. He is buried in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery. The coffee shop continued in business until 1914. Today, the restored Dingley Spice Mill Building is part of Old Sacramento State Historic Park next to the Big Four Building and the California State Railroad Museum.
