Only in NYC can you pull up to Sunday service and find a chinchilla, a hamster, and hundreds of local dogs and cats occupying the pews 🐶 Every October, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights hosts the iconic Feast of St. Francis & Blessing of the Animals. The surreal NYC tradition is celebrated beneath Gaia—a massive, 23-foot rotating Earth installation by Luke Jerram floating directly inside the gothic nave. While the outdoor festival features a literal petting zoo of friendly farm animals, human companions are welcome to bring their own pets right into the cathedral for the beautiful Missa Gaia (Earth Mass). Immediately following the service, the clergy head out to the lawn to offer individual pet blessings to every animal in attendance. Would you bring your pet to church? Let us know in the comments! 🐾👇 📍 Location: Cathedral of St. John the Divine (1047 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY) #nyc #church #zoo #animals #blessingoftheanimals
