Graduate students at NC State, under the Graduate Student Support Plan, are eligible for a minimum of $15,000 yearly for master’s students and $20,000 yearly for Ph.D. candidates. For nine-month contracts spanning the regular academic year, minimum stipends for master’s students are $11,250 and $15,000 for Ph.D. candidates.

Several graduate students expressed concern that the stipends the University is offering them are inadequate for the current cost of living.

Chelsea Lundquist-Wentz, a doctoral student studying public history, said the Department of History performs regular surveys of graduate students to see how students handle the cost of living.

“The majority of graduate students in our program reported completely depleted savings and negative impacts on their ability to do their academic work,” Lundquist-Wentz said. “A majority of students reported having skipped meals, or delayed healthcare or taking out new loans because of their stipend amounts.”

Benjamin Pulgar Guzman, a Ph.D. candidate studying sociology, said additional work can interfere with students’ studies.

“In Ph.D. programs and graduate programs generally, I think we’re kind of told that we can’t work other jobs, or at least that we shouldn’t work other jobs,” Pulgar Guzman said.
