50 years later, Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life remains one of the most ambitious and enduring albums in music history — a deeply human collection of songs about love, family, joy, spirituality, community, and the world around us.

Released on September 28, 1976, Songs in the Key of Life followed a remarkable run of albums — Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness’ First Finale — that saw Wonder continually push the boundaries of his artistry and songwriting. Across two LPs and an accompanying EP, he brought together soul, funk, jazz, pop, and classical influences, creating a musical world as expansive as the subjects he explored.

From the celebration of music itself in “Sir Duke,” to the tenderness of “Isn’t She Lovely,” the social commentary of “Village Ghetto Land,” “Pastime Paradise,” and “Black Man,” and the universal hope of “As” and “Love’s in Need of Love Today,” Wonder moved effortlessly between the deeply personal and the profoundly universal. The album could be joyful and reflective, intimate and socially conscious — often within the same collection of songs.

Songs in the Key of Life won Album of the Year at the 19th Grammy Awards, making Wonder the first artist to win the award three times. In 2008, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and its songs have continued to be sampled, covered, celebrated, and discovered by generations of artists and listeners.

Fifty years later, the songs still speak. They still challenge, comfort, celebrate, and bring us together — a testament to Stevie Wonder’s extraordinary gift for turning the world around him into songs that continue to live on.
