‘A Star Is Born’ was released 8 years ago today.

Bradley Cooper signed on in March 2016 to star in and direct his first feature, a remake of a story first filmed in 1937, and Lady Gaga joined that August. Eric Roth and Will Fetters co-wrote the screenplay with him, and production began in early 2017. Warner Bros. moved the release date several times, from September 28 to May 18 and finally to October 5, 2018, after the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 31.

The music was developed alongside the screenplay, with songs written and reworked during filming to reflect the arcs of Cooper's Jackson Maine and Lady Gaga's Ally. Lady Gaga and Cooper worked with country musicians including Lukas Nelson, who also appears in the film as a member of Cooper's band, and producer Dave Cobb helped shape the sound. Jason Isbell wrote 'Maybe It's Time' after playing it for Lady Gaga in a writing session. 'Shallow,' released on September 27, 2018, became the signature song, and the soundtrack debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

The film grossed over $436 million worldwide against a $36 million budget. It earned eight nominations at the 91st Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Bradley Cooper, Best Actress for Lady Gaga, and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Elliott, and won Best Original Song for 'Shallow.' That song also took the Golden Globe, and Lady Gaga won Best Performance in a Movie at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards. It became one of the defining musical romances of the decade.
