10 years ago today, Solange released ‘A Seat At The Table.’

Days before release, Solange mailed a hardcover book of lyrics and photos, also titled 'A Seat at the Table,' to 86 fans who had signed up on her new website, then invited them to listen to the record with her in real time. Announced on September 26, 2016, the album arrived that Friday through Saint Records and Columbia Records. She described it as a project on identity, empowerment, independence, grief, and healing.

Writing began years earlier. Solange wrote 24 songs at the piano and structured them herself before bringing in producers, with sessions running from 2013 to June 2016, when she finished the album three days before her thirtieth birthday. She revisited 'Cranes in the Sky' in New Iberia, Louisiana, having first written it eight years before. Raphael Saadiq co-executive produced, Master P narrated most of the interludes, and guests included Kelly Rowland, Tweet, Dev Hynes, Lil Wayne, and BJ the Chicago Kid. 'Don't Touch My Hair' followed with a video on October 2.

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with more than 72,000 units, Solange's first chart-topper. Critics widely praised it as her most personal and topical work, an album about what it means to be a Black woman in 2016 that balanced rage, pain, strength, and joy. 'Cranes in the Sky' won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance, and the album still ranks as one of the defining R&B records of the decade.
