9 years ago today, Demi Lovato released ‘Tell Me You Love Me.’

An 18-second black-and-white teaser on August 23, 2017 announced 'Tell Me You Love Me,' showing Lovato singing the title track in a studio before the camera pulled back to reveal the cover art and the September 29 release date. Pre-orders opened shortly after. Lovato described the sixth studio album as a more soulful side of her music, naming Christina Aguilera, Aretha Franklin, and Kehlani as major influences.

Recording took place throughout 2017 at studios in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Vancouver, New York, and Miami. A long roster of producers contributed, including Oak Felder, John Hill, Stint, Mitch Allan, DJ Mustard, and Jax Jones. Released through Island, Hollywood, and Safehouse Records, the album leans into soul and R&B while exploring recovering from heartbreak and being single, on tracks like 'Daddy Issues' and 'You Don't Do It for Me Anymore.'

The lead single, 'Sorry Not Sorry,' arrived that July and became Lovato's highest-charting US single, peaking at number six on the Hot 100 and earning 5x Platinum certification. The title track followed as the second and final single that November, drawing praise for its production and vocals, and it reached hot adult contemporary radio in early 2018. A YouTube documentary, 'Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated,' arrived in October, following the making of the album and looking back over Lovato's career.
