The story begins in 1906, when William J. Riley founded the New Balance Arch Support Company. Based in Boston, Riley’s goal was to improve people’s comfort through custom arch supports inspired by the balance of a chicken’s foot. For decades, New Balance focused solely on making orthopaedic products. The history of New Balance shoes didn’t properly kick off until much later, but these early foundations built a strong legacy in foot health and precision fit.

In the 1960s, New Balance released the Trackster, the first running shoe with a ripple sole and available in multiple widths. It was revolutionary, and marked the brand’s move into athletic footwear. Track teams and runners embraced the model, helping New Balance shift from a niche orthopaedic brand into a serious contender in the world of New Balance athletic shoes. This transition was the first major leap in the history of New Balance shoes.

As the brand grew, so did its range. Today, New Balance clothes include everything from performance apparel to streetwear essentials. Collaborations with designers and artists have helped the brand find a home in both gyms and fashion editorials. It’s no longer just about shoes, New Balance is a full lifestyle brand.
