Happy World Animal Day! The animals of the ocean fill us with such wonder and curiosity that they are at the heart of everything we do.

Consider the tiniest coral polyp, connected to its neighbors in a colony so vast its structure can be seen from space. Or the salmon, which can find the exact stream it was born after years roaming the open ocean, fighting its way upstream to spawn the next generation and die. Or the octopus, an invertebrate so intelligent it can solve puzzles, express curiosity, and change its color so accurately that it vanishes into its surroundings. Or the polar bear, the largest land predator on Earth, yet still considered a marine mammal due to its dependence on the ocean for survival in one of the planet’s harshest environments. And of course, whales and dolphins, whose intelligence could rival our own, able to communicate, cooperate, teach, grieve, and even help other species.

The ocean is so much more than a resource to extract. It is another world within our own, full of intricate lives we rarely get to see. These are the animals who keep us going, day after day, in our work to protect them and the places they call home.
