Hundreds of prisoners across England and Wales have been released early today, under a new scheme designed to free up prison space.

They are being released after the Sentencing Act - a piece of legislation passed earlier this year - came into force on 1 October.

This is just the first stage of the early release scheme, and more people are due to be released in phases until next summer.

But victims are questioning how they will be protected.
