I used to be a lazy designer.

As technology progressed, I felt like my skills didn’t. I downloaded assets, digital brushes, plugins, filters, textures… anything that could make my work look more like “art” without actually making the art myself.

Over the past year, I’ve been trying to change that.

I’ve started going back to my hands first. Sketching, painting, cutting, making marks and experimenting before opening up my laptop.

Because they’re still the best tools we have. PLUS, They’re free. No monthly subscription required 😆

So, I gave myself a project:

THE BRIEF:
Create the visual identity and packaging for a new home fragrance brand.

The brand should feel tactile, considered and slightly imperfect, with the identity built around expressive typography and handmade elements.

I wanted the packaging to feel less like something that had been perfectly constructed on a screen, and more like something that had been made by a person.

So I started with the physical stuff first: oil pastels, paper, paint, ink, scissors, rough textures and whatever else I could get my hands on.

Then I brought those elements into Illustrator and built the identity from there.

A reminder that sometimes the best design tool isn’t another plugin. It’s your hands. 🙌🏻
