Comment the word BUTTON to get my free Top Illustrator Tips & Tricks video course 🤙🏼

Having live, editable buttons in Illustrator is incredibly useful when you’re building out a design system or creating assets that need to stay consistent. It means you can easily adjust text, colour, or shape without having to rebuild every single button each time you make a small change. It keeps things flexible, scalable, and saves a lot of time once it’s all set up.

The only catch is that the process to actually make these live buttons still feels a bit clunky. This method, using the Appearance panel, is the only way I know how to do it and while it works, it definitely feels outdated. If anyone from the Illustrator team happens to see this, please consider making this kind of functionality a simple one-click feature instead of something that relies on tricking the Appearance panel 😆

I say this out of love, because Illustrator is the tool I spend most of my time in. It’s still the program that gives me the most control and creative freedom, even with a few quirks here and there. And yes, I already know some people will say “just use Figma for buttons,” and you absolutely can. Use whatever tool makes you feel most comfortable and allows you to create your best work. Illustrator just happens to be mine.
