"I was among the first Samburu Warriors to become involved in lion conservation. Bringing others from my generation into this work was a hard, contentious journey, but an incredibly meaningful one." — Jeneria Lekilelei, Samburu Elder and #NatGeoExplorer

"What I hope for every Warrior in the future is that we carry this forward, generation after generation, so that Warriors are no longer known for hunting lions at all, but for protecting them."

Pride of Samburu, a feature documentary by the National Geographic Society’s Impact Story Lab, follows Lekilelei as he dedicates his life to building coexistence between his Samburu community and the lions of Northern Kenya. It also explores his personal transformation — shifting from hunting the lions to becoming one of their fiercest defenders. When he realized that only 11 lions remained on their land, Lekilelei, ewasolions and the Samburu community led efforts that helped the lion population grow to more than 60 in less than 10 years.
