The NHL is back, which feels like a good time to explain something a surprising number of people don’t know: Fresh Tape is a hockey reference.

On New Year’s Day 2017, before FTM existed, our founder Jared Kleinstein was playing outdoor pond hockey in the mountains. He knew he wanted to start a sports creative agency, but still needed a name.

While wrapping up that day, he said to his dad: “Is there any better feeling than fresh tape on a hockey stick?”

A hockey reference. Fresh content. Video tape. Content that sticks. It was almost annoyingly perfect.

Nearly a decade later, hockey has become a pretty big part of the FTM story. We’ve worked on 50+ hockey projects across the National Hockey League (NHL), multiple NHL clubs, Electronic Arts (EA), Bleacher Report, United States Olympic & Paralympic Foundation, and UC Health spanning Winter Classics, All-Star Games, Stadium Series, Stanley Cup Playoffs & Finals, Drafts, Media Days, Olympics, Paralympics, player milestones and even an HBO docu-series.

We’ve made social-first content, built sets, fabricated things, edited countless content pieces, animated things and spent a LOT of time around sheets of ice.

So with hockey officially back, we went digging through 9+ years of the archives.

Turns out Jared might have been onto something...

There really isn’t a better feeling than fresh tape on a hockey stick.
