Story Book 1128 | DAY 59 🚀 SAP CAP POC #2 | #OperationSelfLearnings Same Application, Two Development Runtimes — Local VS Code vs SAP Business Application Studio Today I took my SAP CAP Books POC one step deeper — moving beyond simply getting the application to run and understanding where it runs, how we reach it, and why the runtime URLs differ.

💻 Local VS Code I started the CAP application with: npx cds watch The runtime was available at: http://localhost:4004 Here, localhost means the CAP Node.js process is running on my local machine.

☁️ SAP Business Application Studio (BAS) I then ran the same CAP project using cds watch inside an SAP BAS Dev Space. CAP again listens on port 4004 inside the development environment, but the browser reaches it through a BAS-generated HTTPS URL that exposes the Dev Space port rather than through my machines localhost. Conceptually: Local Browser → localhost:4004 → CAP runtime on my machine BAS Browser → BAS HTTPS URL → port 4004 → CAP runtime inside the Dev Space

💡 Same application. Different execution environment and access path. In both environments, I could access the same CatalogService, Books entity and CAP Fiori preview. I also implemented an: orderBook(bookID, quantity) CAP action. Ordering 2 copies reduced the stock from 12 → 10, confirming that the service was executing custom business logic rather than simply exposing data. Another distinction became much clearer through this POC:

🔹 /odata/v4/catalog/Books → OData V4 API
🔹 /$fiori-preview/CatalogService/Books → development-time Fiori preview And Git/GitHub has a completely different responsibility. Git versions and tracks changes to the source code.
