It’s OVER for Downtown Ottawa 😰💔

Time after time, we keep seeing serious incidents in the heart of our city. At some point, we have to ask whether simply adding more police is enough, or whether Ottawa needs to do more to address homelessness, addiction, mental-health crises and the suffering happening on our streets.

Early Thursday morning, an innocent woman and man were left fighting for their lives after police say they were apparently randomly stabbed downtown.

Imagine being either of the victims. One was stabbed near Rideau Street and had to find an OC Transpo bus just to escape and get help.

Shortly afterward, another person was allegedly attacked nearby and also left fighting for their life. Two people simply going about their lives were suddenly left fighting for them.

This is starting to feel dystopian. People shouldn’t have to wonder whether walking down an alley, heading to school, catching the bus or simply being downtown could put their life at risk.

Ottawa Police have promised an increased police presence downtown, but we’ve heard calls for increased enforcement after serious incidents before.

How much policing can we add before we also seriously address the conditions that leave vulnerable people on our streets without adequate treatment, housing and support?

This isn’t about blaming every homeless person or person struggling with addiction or mental illness. The overwhelming majority aren’t out hurting random people.

It’s about asking whether our current system is actually helping people who desperately need support while keeping everyone else safe. Two people nearly lost their lives today. Something needs to change.

What do YOU think Ottawa needs to do differently⁉️🤔⤵️
