🔥 One of the wildest sights in Dakar history is Jan de Rooy’s massive DAF TurboTwin X1 running down Ari Vatanen’s Peugeot 405 T16 at more than 200 km/h across the desert.

The 1988 DAF used two 11.6-liter diesel engines with three turbochargers each, producing roughly 1,200 horsepower in total.

Despite weighing around 11 tons, it was capable of extraordinary straight-line speed and could genuinely run with the fastest cars in the rally.

The famous footage of De Rooy overtaking Vatanen became the defining image of just how extreme the unrestricted Dakar truck era had become.

That same year, the team’s second TurboTwin suffered a catastrophic high-speed crash that killed co-driver Kees van Loevezijn, after which DAF withdrew from the event and soon ended its factory rally program.

It was an era where engineering ambition was allowed to get dangerously close to insanity.
