🚨 California’s new CARS Act is now in effect, forcing dealers to be far more transparent about pricing, financing, add-ons and the actual terms of a vehicle deal.
⠀
Dealers must disclose the vehicle’s total price in ads and in the first written communication involving a specific car or financing discussion.
⠀
Optional products like GAP coverage, service contracts and theft protection also have to be clearly identified as optional, and dealers cannot charge buyers for add-ons that provide no meaningful benefit.
⠀
The law also prohibits dealers from materially misrepresenting pricing, financing or lease costs, vehicle availability, trade-in values, down payments and add-on products.
⠀
Qualifying used vehicles priced at $50,000 or less now come with a three-calendar-day cancellation right, although mileage, condition and restocking requirements still apply.
⠀
Dealers also have to maintain key advertisements, pricing disclosures, customer communications, add-on consents and cancellation records for two years.
⠀
For enthusiasts who spend hours hunting specific trims, negotiating ADM and comparing dealer offers, these rules could make the buying process noticeably harder to manipulate.
⠀
Do you think other states should adopt similar rules for car dealerships?
⠀
What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
