Six months of exclusively breastfeeding twins. Both of them. On demand. No formula. No pump. No bottles. No schedule.

And I keep hearing the same thing: “you made it to six months, that’s amazing, are you going to stop soon?”

The assumption underneath that question is that six months is where the benefits taper off. Where breast milk stops earning its keep. Where the hard work is done and the rest is optional.

That’s not what the research says.

At six months, breast milk is doing something different than it did in the newborn phase — not less, different. Your body is reading your baby’s cues, the pathogens in your environment, the developmental stage they’re in, and adjusting the composition accordingly. The antibodies in your milk this week are targeted to this week. The DHA supporting brain development doesn’t stop being critical at six months. The bacteria seeding their gut microbiome is actively building an immune foundation they’ll carry for years.

The WHO recommends breastfeeding for two years and beyond — not because it’s a radical stance, but because the evidence supports it. Six months is a milestone worth celebrating. It is not a finish line.

What changes at six months is the pressure. The “are you still doing that?” The “they’ll be okay with formula now.” The suggestions that your body has done enough and it’s time to let it go.

My body has been feeding two humans simultaneously for six months. I am not done until we are done.

To every mama still going past the milestone everyone told you was enough — keep going. Your milk is still doing everything. 🤍
