Athan Kaliakmanis didn’t expect to see the field Sunday in London. The Commanders’ seventh-round rookie began the day as the third-string quarterback, with Jayden Daniels sidelined by a dislocated elbow and Marcus Mariota getting the start. That changed in the first quarter when Colts defensive lineman Laiatu Latu landed on Mariota’s right leg during a sack, forcing him out with a knee injury and pushing Kaliakmanis into his first NFL action. He took a big hit shortly after entering and popped right back up, then bounced back from an interception by hitting Treylon Burks on a 47-yard touchdown in the third quarter, the first of his career.

The final numbers, 15 of 33 for 186 yards with a TD and a pick in a 30-13 loss, won’t jump off the page, but the context matters. Kaliakmanis was the seventh QB taken in the 2026 draft and earned the QB3 job with a strong preseason that beat out Sam Hartman. He’s also made some history already, becoming the first Rutgers quarterback to take regular-season snaps since 2005. With Washington sitting at 1-3 and Daniels hoping to return in Week 5 against the Giants, Kaliakmanis may or may not get the nod again this week, but he showed enough arm talent and toughness on Sunday to suggest he belongs.
