Naomi’s Father, Leonard François had never played competitive tennis.

But after watching one televised match and studying tennis books from the library, he decided he could coach his two daughters.

So he did.

He coached them full time on public courts, for free.

But someone still had to pay for the strings, shoes, travel and flights. That was Naomi’s mother, Tamaki Osaka.

She worked long hours, sometimes sleeping just three hours in her car before going back to work the next morning.

Her husband had no income. Her paycheck kept the tennis dream moving.

Naomi saw what her mother was giving up.

She has spoken about watching her mother cry and training harder because she wanted her mom to work less.

Everyone remembers Leonard’s “blueprint.”

But a blueprint doesn’t move anywhere without someone willing to fund it.
