Growing up, Sha’Carri would race her aunt up hills at full speed. The finish line was her grandmother’s car.
Her aunt never slowed down. Not once.

And when Sha’Carri got tired, really tired, the kind of tired that makes you want to quit, her grandmother, Betty Harp, had the same answer every time:

“Don’t start nothing and don’t finish it. You start, you finish.”

Her grandmother wasn’t repeating a motivational slogan, she was passing down something she’d learned from her own life.

And when asked how Sha’Carri became so tough, Big Momma didn’t hesitate:

“Sha’Carri’s tough; I made her tough.”

Years later, when Sha’Carri stood on the Olympic stage in Paris, the note waiting for her from her grandmother wasn’t about winning.

It said: “Do your best & have fun.”

The woman who taught her to finish had already taught her something more important than how to win.
